In this article

IRONMAN Kalmar is the full-distance race people choose when they want a fast, flat course and a city that turns out for the marathon. The profile is easy. The conditions are not: a brackish open-water swim, a six-kilometre bridge to an island that is normally closed to bikes, and a Baltic wind that decides more of your bike split than any hill will.

This guide covers the swim, bike and run, how much elevation there really is (sources disagree, and we show where), what wind does to a 180 km ride, how the professionals have raced it, and a pacing plan you can adapt. Details were checked in October 2026 against the 2027 edition. Courses change, so the official athlete guide always has the last word.

Why Kalmar has the reputation it does

IRONMAN Kalmar was first held in 2012 and doubles as the Swedish national championship. The race runs for most of a week alongside a shorter-distance event and an IronKids day. In the IRONMAN Athletes’ Choice Awards cited by the organiser, it topped the lists for the most recommended IRONMAN event and for the best run course, based on feedback from more than 55,000 participants worldwide.

Two things make it unusual. Almost all of the bike is on Öland, so spectators concentrate in the city, which makes the run feel like a street festival. And the Öland Bridge crossing is a once-a-year privilege: it is normally closed to cyclists.

Swim: 3.8 km in the Kalmar Strait

The swim is a single lap in the strait between Kalmar and Öland, in the Baltic Sea. The water is partly salt and partly fresh, so it is less buoyant than a true ocean swim. IRONMAN describes the shoreline where the course turns back towards the city as lined with spectators, close enough that swimmers pass an arm’s length from them.

Water temperature has been 18 °C in 2023, 19 °C in 2024 and 20 °C in 2025, so a wetsuit swim is the normal expectation. Race officials make the final call on race morning. Choppy conditions are possible; if wind builds across the strait, you feel it here first.

    What to do with that

    • Test your wetsuit in brackish or cool open water before race week. Buoyancy and body position differ from a pool or from salt water. Our wetsuit guide covers fit and buoyancy.
    • Expect a crowded, emotional start. Position yourself by honest swim pace, not by nerves. If crowds or open water worry you, read our guides to open-water anxiety and open-water swimming.
    • No swim route file is published, so learn the buoy line and exit from the athlete briefing rather than from a map.

Bike: 180 km over the Öland Bridge

The bike is described by IRONMAN as a single loop: out of Kalmar, across the bridge to Öland, a long island section across open farmland, then back over the bridge to the mainland. Route-planning sources name Färjestaden, Mörbylånga and Degerhamn on the island. Older descriptions, including Wikipedia, still describe a 122 km loop plus a 58 km northern loop through Rockneby. Treat those as out of date and check the official GPX before you plan anything around landmarks.

    The bridge

The Öland Bridge is 6,072 m long and opened on 30 September 1972, when it was Europe’s longest bridge. Its high span rises to about 41.7 m above sea level and drops to 6.65 m at the lowest. You cross it twice, and because it is open to the Baltic, it is the most exposed part of the day. It is also the nearest thing to a climb the course has.

    How much climbing is there?

This is where published numbers diverge. The profile is flat by IRONMAN standards: from the official GPX, the lowest and highest points are only 53 m apart over 179.6 km. Total gain depends on how the data is smoothed and whether the source is a map, a barometric device or a GPS watch.

    Reported bike elevation gain

    • Keiro Labs course model397 m
    • Unbroken, from the official GPX484 m
    • TRI247 race guide≈ 500 m
    • Race Mind course profile≈ 750 m
    • Athlete GPS watch (Slowtwitch forum)767 m

The highlighted figure comes from the official GPX file, as processed by Unbroken (179.6 km, 7,234 route points). GPS watches tend to overstate small rolling climbs, so the lower figures are more credible for planning.

By any of these measures it is a very different race from our IRONMAN Lanzarote guide, where the bike climbs roughly 2,550 m. If you want the Danish alternative that is more rolling, see IRONMAN Copenhagen.

What wind does to a 180 km ride

On a flat course, gradient barely matters, so wind becomes the main variable. It is also costly even when it is “fair”. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of air speed, so a headwind slows you more than the same tailwind speeds you up.

To make that concrete, we modelled a rider holding 180 W for 180.2 km, with half the distance into a steady wind and half with it behind.

Time lost to wind at constant power

    • Calm (no wind): 33.1 km/h throughout0 min
    • 5 km/h: 30.0 km/h into the wind, 36.3 km/h with it+2 min
    • 10 km/h: 27.2 km/h into the wind, 39.6 km/h with it+9 min
    • 15 km/h: 24.5 km/h into the wind, 43.1 km/h with it+20 min
    • 20 km/h: 22.0 km/h into the wind, 46.7 km/h with it+35 min

Bar length and right-hand figure show minutes lost against a calm 5:27 ride.

Model assumptions: 80 kg rider, bike and kit; CdA 0.32 m²; rolling resistance 0.004; air density 1.18 kg/m³; 97.5% drivetrain efficiency; flat road. Real routes add crosswinds, turns and sheltered sections, so treat the numbers as a guide to the size of the effect, not a forecast.

For scale, the ten-year median daily maximum wind in the race window is about 17 km/h. A steady 15 km/h wind split evenly between headwind and tailwind therefore costs around twenty minutes at the same effort. That is why a plan built on power is safer than one built on speed.

    How to ride it

    • Pace by power, not speed. Speed will swing 15–20 km/h across the day. Our IRONMAN bike pacing guide explains how to choose a target.
    • Do not chase the headwind. Hold target power or a touch below on exposed stretches, and don’t overspend to “make up” time on the tailwind.
    • Stay low and stable on the bridge. Take food and drink before you reach it, not in the middle of it. See our guides to bike hydration setup and bike storage.
    • Check the forecast on race week. Wind direction relative to the bridge matters more than the headline speed.

Aid-station spacing and the penalty-tent locations for 2027 had not been confirmed when we checked, so carry enough to be self-sufficient between stations until the athlete guide is out.

Run: three laps through the city

The marathon is three laps of roughly 14 km: along the beach, through the city centre, out through the old city wall at Västerport, and finishing next to the cathedral. It is flat, with about 144 m of gain from the official GPX. Race reports describe the support as continuous, with neighbourhood parties around the loops.

Because the course is three laps, you get several clear checkpoints and several chances to feel your mistakes. Many athletes go out too quickly because the crowds are loud and the road is flat.

    • Make lap one deliberately restrained. Our guide to running after cycling and IRONMAN run training guide explain how to prepare for that.
    • Use lap boundaries for fuel and a short check: pace, effort, stomach. Our IRONMAN nutrition plan has hour-by-hour targets.
    • Spectators can see you repeatedly in the centre, which is a pleasure but also a temptation to speed up. Decide your pace before you arrive.

    Transitions

According to the 2027 course information, T1 and T2 are in the Lustgården car park in central Kalmar, next to the IRONMAN Village, with direct access from the swim exit. Bike bags are blue and run bags are red. Facilities include toilets, bike mechanics, pumps, a penalty tent, water refill and a lost-chip service. Our transitions guide and race-day checklist will help you plan the details.

    How hard is IRONMAN Kalmar?

Hard to rate with a single number, so here are the two halves.

    What makes it fast

    • A flat bike and a flat run, with very few sharp climbs.
    • A swim that is normally wetsuit-legal.
    • Crowds and logistics that are consistently praised by athletes.

    What makes it hard

    • Wind on the bridge and the island, which punishes poor pacing and rewards patience.
    • A swim in open, brackish water that can be choppy.
    • A flat run that rewards discipline: nothing hides a fast bike on the marathon.

Overall: easy terrain, but demanding conditions. It suits a well-prepared first-timer who is comfortable in open water, and a more experienced athlete chasing a personal best on a calm day. Our guides to how to train for an IRONMAN and the free 40-week plan cover the preparation. For a structured day-by-day workbook, see our 36-week beginner full-distance plan.

How the professionals have raced it

The 2025 and 2026 races brought strong professional fields, and the 2026 race was part of the IRONMAN Pro Series. Both set records. They show what the course allows in good conditions. They are not a target for most athletes.

Athlete Swim Bike Run Finish Year
    Jonas Schomburg, men 44:57 4:00:44 2:34:36 7:22:57 2026
    Laura Philipp, women 52:37 4:24:51 2:52:57 8:13:37 2026
    Katrine Græsbøll Christensen, women 55:48 4:31:59 2:56:06 8:27:49 2025

Splits exclude transitions. Robert Kallin also set a new bike best of 3:53:12 in 2026.

Schomburg’s bike averaged about 45 km/h and Philipp’s about 41 km/h. Those are professional speeds in good conditions. For age-group benchmarks across all IRONMAN races, see our average IRONMAN time and pace chart.

A pacing plan you can adapt

The table below turns four common finish targets into splits. It is flat-course arithmetic with calm-weather assumptions, not a prediction. For your own numbers, use our IRONMAN Course Time Calculator or the Triathlon Race Time Calculator.

Target Swim T1 + T2 Bike Run Bike speed Run pace
    9:30 1:05
    1:43/100 m
    0:08 4:55 3:22 36.7 km/h 4:47/km
    10:30 1:10
    1:51/100 m
    0:10 5:25 3:45 33.3 km/h 5:20/km
    12:00 1:20
    2:06/100 m
    0:12 6:10 4:18 29.2 km/h 6:07/km
    14:00 1:35
    2:30/100 m
    0:14 7:05 5:06 25.4 km/h 7:15/km

Each row adds up to the target. A steady wind can add 10–20 minutes to the bike at the same power (see above), so treat the bike column as a calm-day reference and rely on power on the day.

Practical rule: set your bike target by power and your run target by effort for the first lap, then adjust by pace only after the halfway point. Taper properly before a race like this. Our taper guide shows how, and our IRONMAN pacing strategy covers the whole day.

    Weather and conditions

    Measure Typical value
    Water temperature 18 °C (2023), 19 °C (2024), 20 °C (2025)
Air temperature 13–26 °C on a typical race day; a ten-year median of 13.5–22.4 °C across the race window
Wind Median daily maximum about 17 km/h across the race window
Rain Median daily rainfall about 0.3 mm

Ten years of weather for a 15-day window centred on the race date. This is historical context, not a forecast. Laura Philipp described the 2026 conditions as tough despite her record.

Plan for a cool start and a warm afternoon, and bring a layer for the bike. The weather rarely decides the race. Wind does.

    Getting there and entering

    • By air: Kalmar Öland Airport (KLR) is 5 km from the city, with airport bus 402 to Kalmar Central.
    • By train from Denmark: direct trains connect Copenhagen Airport and Kalmar in about 3.5 hours. You do not need a car.
    • Spectators: the bike is mostly on Öland, so family and friends are better placed in the city. Near T2, along the beach and around the main square all work well.
    • Entry: 2027 sold out quickly. Check IRONMAN’s official registration page for returned slots, athlete transfers or waitlists, and avoid unofficial resellers. Accommodation also fills early.

    Race-week checklist

    • Confirm start times, bag colours and transition rules in the official athlete guide.
    • Check wind direction and the wetsuit announcement.
    • Pack for 13 to 26 °C: a layer for the bike, and sun protection for the run.
    • Decide your bike power and first-lap run pace before you arrive.
    • Plan fuel for the exposed stretches before you reach them.
    • Book your trip home early. Trains and rooms are busy around race weekend.

    Frequently asked questions

    When is IRONMAN Kalmar 2027?

Saturday 21 August 2027, in Kalmar, Sweden. Event calendars list a 06:45 start; confirm in the athlete guide.

Is IRONMAN Kalmar a flat course?

Yes. The official GPX shows about 484 m of bike gain and 144 m on the run, with only 53 m between the lowest and highest bike points. Wind is the harder part.

Do you cycle over the Öland Bridge?

Yes, twice: out to the island and back. The 6 km bridge is normally closed to cyclists, so the race is the one day of the year you can ride it.

    Is the swim wetsuit-legal?

Usually. Water was 18–20 °C in 2023–2025. Race officials make the final decision on the day.

What is the IRONMAN Kalmar course record?

Jonas Schomburg holds the men’s record at 7:22:57 and Laura Philipp the women’s at 8:13:37, both set in 2026.

Is Kalmar a good first IRONMAN?

It can be. The profile is forgiving and the support is excellent. The risks are open-water confidence and wind, so practise both before you go.

Is IRONMAN Kalmar 2027 sold out?

Yes. More than 3,000 athletes registered. Check IRONMAN’s official site for any returned slots or transfers.
