    What is a triathlon taper?

    A triathlon taper is a planned reduction in training load before race day. You are no longer trying to build major new fitness. You are trying to keep the fitness you already earned while allowing accumulated fatigue to fall.

    That is different from simply stopping training. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of endurance athletes found that tapering improved time-trial performance.     How should you taper swimming, cycling and running?

    The three sports do not create fatigue in exactly the same way. Running is weight-bearing and usually carries the largest musculoskeletal cost. Swimming is low impact and technical, so frequent water contact can be useful even when total metres fall. Cycling can keep race-specific intensity with far less duration than a normal long ride.

    What should race week look like?

    Exact days depend on travel and your normal routine, but the pattern becomes simpler as race day approaches: shorter sessions, familiar intensity and no heroic workouts.
