    Why there is no single “good” triathlon time

    Distance labels are not always exact

    World Triathlon lists 750 m / 20 km / 5 km as the common sprint format and 1.5 km / 40 km / 10 km as standard distance. Yet individual races may shorten or modify a leg because of venue design, safety or local rules.

    Course speed changes everything

    A flat bike course with smooth roads and mild weather is not comparable with a hilly, windy course. The same athlete can produce very different finish times at the same fitness level.

    Drafting rules matter

    Some short-course events are draft-legal while many age-group races are not. That changes cycling dynamics and makes finish-time comparisons less clean.

    Transitions count

    T1 and T2 can add several minutes, especially at large events with long transition runs. Official finish time includes those minutes.

    For the common 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run format, a finish around 1:15–1:30 can be a useful recreational performance target for an athlete with some experience. A first-time athlete may reasonably take longer, while competitive age-group racers can be much faster.

    Do not treat 1:15–1:30 as “the average.”

    It is an editorial planning range for the canonical sprint distance. Real sprint courses vary. The 2026 World Triathlon Hamburg open sprint, for example, uses a 500 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run, so its finish times should not be compared directly with a 750 m swim race.

    A more useful sprint scorecard is simple: did you swim calmly, ride at a sustainable high effort, run close to your standalone ability and avoid wasting time in transition? At short distances, a few minutes can materially change your placing.

    The common standard or Olympic-distance format is 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running. For many recreational triathletes, roughly 2:30–3:00 is a useful planning band. Again, this is not presented as a measured global average.

    Because the race is long enough for pacing and endurance to matter—but short enough for sustained speed to remain important—the spread between beginner, mid-pack and competitive age-group times can be substantial. If your goal is to judge how strong a result really is, use the event's age-group results rather than a generic internet chart.

    What is a good Half Ironman / IRONMAN 70.3 time?

    Here the evidence is much stronger. One large peer-reviewed analysis included 823,464 IRONMAN 70.3 finish records from 197 events across 183 race locations. Mean finish time was 5:46:53 for men and 6:16:18 for women. Weighting those means by the number of male and female records gives a combined benchmark of approximately 5:53:58.

    1. Compare the exact course

      Start with results from the same event and, ideally, the same edition or similar weather conditions.

    2. Use your age group

      Age-group rank is usually more meaningful than comparing yourself with the professional field or a global mean.

    3. Look at each split

      A total time can hide a strong bike and weak run, or an efficient swim followed by poor pacing. Splits show where the result came from.

    4. Include race execution

      Nutrition, mechanical issues, transitions, heat management and pacing are part of triathlon performance—not noise to remove from the result.
