An IRONMAN 70.3, commonly called a Half Ironman, is 70.3 miles / 113 km: a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, 56-mile (90 km) bike and 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. It is exactly half the branded full IRONMAN distance across all three disciplines.
IRONMAN 70.3 is a branded, fixed-distance format. “Middle distance” is a broader triathlon category and does not always mean 1.9/90/21.1. World Triathlon currently lists its common Middle format as 2.5 km swimming, 80 km cycling and 20 km running. Always check the exact event course rather than assuming the label guarantees the distances.
Half Ironman distance in miles and kilometers
| Discipline | Miles | Kilometers |
|---|---|---|
| Swim | 1.2 mi | 1.9 km |
| Bike | 56 mi | 90 km |
| Run | 13.1 mi | 21.1 km |
| Total | 70.3 mi | 113 km |
The name “70.3” comes directly from the total mileage. A full IRONMAN is 140.6 miles / 226 km, so every discipline is doubled: 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and a 42.2 km marathon.
How long does a Half Ironman take?
A peer-reviewed study of 823,464 IRONMAN 70.3 age-group finish records found mean total times of 5:46:53 for men and 6:16:18 for women. Weighting the two groups by the number of records gives a combined historical benchmark of approximately 5:53:58.
Think of roughly 5:54 as a large-sample historical benchmark, not as a target everyone should chase. The study covered many locations, and race venue was an important factor in performance. A hilly, hot 70.3 can be substantially slower than a flat race for the same athlete.

The 1.9 km swim
The swim is long enough that efficiency matters, but it is still a relatively small share of the total race. In the large 70.3 dataset, mean swim times were 38:42 for men and 40:55 for women.
What makes it difficult
Open-water navigation, mass starts, chop, current, water temperature and wetsuit rules can all change the pace you can sustain compared with a pool.
What matters most
For most age-groupers, the priority is an efficient, controlled swim that gets you to T1 without unnecessary fatigue. A few minutes gained in the water are rarely worth starting the bike over-stressed.
The 90 km bike
The bike is the longest discipline in both time and distance. Mean cycling times in the large dataset were 2:54:29 for men and 3:11:34 for women. The weighted combined equivalent is about 2:58:36, or roughly 30.2 km/h.
That speed is descriptive, not prescriptive. Wind, elevation, road surface, aerodynamics and drafting rules can change speed dramatically for the same physiological effort.
Half Ironman pacing is about reaching T2 with enough energy to run well. A slightly conservative bike can produce a faster overall race if it prevents a large slowdown in the final 10 km of the run.
If you are deciding what bike to race, our road bike vs triathlon bike comparison explains the aerodynamic and practical trade-offs.
The 21.1 km run
The final leg is a full half marathon. In the large dataset, mean run times were 2:05:14 for men and 2:15:01 for women. The weighted combined equivalent is approximately 2:07:35, or around 6:03/km.
An IRONMAN 70.3 run is not the same as a fresh half marathon. You begin it after 91.9 km of swimming and cycling, so cycling intensity, fueling, temperature and muscular durability all influence how close you can run to your standalone ability.
How do transitions fit into the 70.3 distance?
T1 and T2 do not add to the advertised 70.3 miles, but they do count toward official finish time. The weighted difference between mean total time and the published swim, bike and run means is about 8½ minutes. That is best interpreted as a derived combined transition/remainder estimate, not a directly measured universal transition average.
T1: swim to bike
Exit the water, reach your bike, remove wetsuit if used, put on helmet and cycling equipment, then cross the mount line.
T2: bike to run
Rack the bike, change into run gear and leave transition. Large transition areas can add meaningful distance and time.
What are the Half Ironman cutoff times?
Many IRONMAN 70.3 events use a final cutoff of around 8 hours 30 minutes, but cutoff rules are event-specific. A current 2026 example, IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu in the Philippines, gives athletes 70 minutes for the swim, a cumulative 5 hours 30 minutes for the bike and 8 hours 30 minutes for the full race, measured from the relevant rolling-start release.
Some events use intermediate bike or run checkpoints, unusual swim courses or different timing references. Read the athlete guide and race-week information for the exact event you entered.

Half Ironman vs Olympic vs full Ironman
| Format | Swim | Bike | Run | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / Olympic | 1.5 km | 40 km | 10 km | 51.5 km |
| IRONMAN 70.3 | 1.9 km | 90 km | 21.1 km | 113 km |
| IRONMAN | 3.8 km | 180 km | 42.2 km | 226 km |
Moving from Olympic distance to 70.3 increases the importance of fueling, sustained aerodynamic comfort and run durability. Moving from 70.3 to a full IRONMAN doubles every leg but creates more than double the challenge because fatigue accumulates for much longer.
How should you prepare for 113 km?
-
Build consistency before volume
Regular swimming, cycling and running matters more than one heroic weekend. The race rewards durability across all three sports.
-
Make the bike sustainable
Long rides should build comfort in your race position and teach you to hold a steady effort without damaging the run.
-
Practice running off the bike
Brick sessions teach you how race pace feels when your legs are already fatigued.
-
Train your fueling strategy
Use long sessions to test carbohydrate, fluid and sodium intake before race day rather than improvising at the event.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilometers is a Half Ironman?
An IRONMAN 70.3 totals 113 km: 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running.
Why is it called 70.3?
The three disciplines add up to 70.3 miles: 1.2 + 56 + 13.1.
Is a Half Ironman exactly half an Ironman?
Yes. Each branded IRONMAN 70.3 discipline is exactly half the corresponding full IRONMAN distance.
Is middle distance always the same as a 70.3?
No. World Triathlon lists a common Middle format of 2.5 km / 80 km / 20 km, while IRONMAN 70.3 is fixed at 1.9 km / 90 km / 21.1 km.
What is the average Half Ironman time?
A weighted historical benchmark from 823,464 IRONMAN 70.3 records is about 5:54.
What is the Half Ironman cutoff?
Many 70.3 races use an 8:30 final cutoff, but the exact swim, bike, run and intermediate cutoffs are event-specific.
