Treadmill running is useful for controlled pace work, but it is not identical to racing outdoors. Belt calibration, room temperature, lack of turns and hills, and the psychological effect of a fixed belt speed can all change perceived effort.
Why does my watch show more than 5.00 km in a 5K race?
A certified 5K course is measured along an efficient route through the course. You may run farther because you weave around people, take wide corners or simply do not follow the shortest possible line. GPS itself also has measurement error, especially around buildings, trees and sharp turns.
